Lakefront Lockheeds

Friend of mine sent me these pictures today from Lakefront airport in New Orleans. Looks like a Loadstar went turtle and a PV2 has been moved but at least stayed on its wheels.

I have no idea. That is why I posted them here... maybe find out the story behind them. Mainly the PV2. Looks like the ailerons and flaps are off.

Are we certain the blue unit is a Harpoon? The photo isn't very clear, but the vertical stabs don't look quite right.

(Of course my eyesight isn't quite what it used to be...)

That isn't a PV-2, I think it is a Howard 500. I believe that it (and the Lodestar) are owned by Taylor Energy, or at one time were.

I agree with Tim, it certainly looks like a Howard 500, though I've never heard of one with a 3-bladed prop before.

Ah... I see... saw the big engines and blue paint and assumed PV2! I have heard the name Taylor Energy and them owning Lockheeds before.

Taylor energy did own a Howard 500, and a Harpoon among other aircraft when I was there 3 years ago. It was the first time I ever saw a Howard 500. It was a little larger than I imagined. It was in the process of being restored. It was in pretty rough shape though as well as bare aluminum.

Tim is correct. The blue plane has been Howardized (I believe it is a Howard 350), but it was a PV-1 Ventura and was last registered N234P. It is one of the few surviving PV-1s that flew with the RCAF. Wish I had the funds to buy it, convert it back to a PV-1, paint it back to its RCAF markings, and put it on the circuit. Venturas just don't get any respect.

The overturned aircraft is a Lockheed 18 Lodestar owned by Pat Taylor of Taylor Energy. The two tone blue aircraft is a Howard 350. Pat also has a Howard 500 in one of the hangars.

Taylor Energy have owned four large Lockheeds in recent years. The former RCAF machine is a Howard Super Ventura-the Howard 500 is a former RAF PV-1 Ventura and they have had two Lodestars.

I presume one of the Lockheeds I'm missing a photo of is behind the
Ventura. The other photo-missing bird may have left it's mark on
the ramp by the massive oil belchings in the foreground of the Ventura.


Howard 500(c/n-500-110), c/n-5793, N5831Y, fmr N515N, no photo

David, I haven't been able to backtrack the H500 to RAF PV-1,
although it's c/n-5793 falls within the numbers block provided by Baugher,
if I'm interpreting his list correctly. Can you fill in the blanks here?
