I kept reading that name over and over, thinking, “I swear I know this name from somewhere” then it hit me. In 1996, I got a ride in a P-51 with Ray at the controls in formation with the Collings B-17 and 24. The odd thing was to pay for the ride (the paying person had wiped out on a motorcycle just before Ray was to leave, leaving him with an open back seat), I agreed to paint some nose art onto the back of an A-2 jacket which I was going to include in the deal as I knew a vendor I could get one from that wouldn’t break the bank. I gave him all my contact info (address and phone # in those pre-internet days), then I never heard from him again. You usually never hear from people when you’re expecting something from them, but I always thought it was odd he never got back to me to get something he wanted that I was fully prepared to do for him. Oh well, I guess he’d lost my info somewhere along the way and I didn’t have his info (because it didn’t occur to me I wouldn’t hear from him). After a Google search, I see how active he is in warbirds still. I’m surprised I never bumped into him again after that, but I was never much for schmoozing with modern pilots (I usually reserved my socializing for pilots who flew in WW2).
