L.H. Leonard "Helicopter-Type Aircraft" VTOL Tailsitters

Thu May 19, 2011 12:27 am

Just put up a new article at RetroMechanix.com on L.H. Leonard's unorthodox "Helicopter-Type Aircraft" VTOL tailsitters proposed to the US Navy & Army Air Corps in 1939:

It features 26 images, including an artist's impression, plans, and an engineering analysis. Possibly the strangest fighter proposal I've come across in this period!

the online powers that be tell me the site is 'forbidden' when I click the link, must still be very sensitive stuff even after 72 years

Unfortunately, the site is down at the moment, will try to have it up and running again this evening.

I have some old popular mechanics and others from 1935-6 to the 70's. I remember seeing a similar craft in a article. Will have to look for it.

A few Leonard designs did appear in those types of magazines, though these particular ones have never been published before, as far as I know.

RetroMechanix.com was down yesterday due to some technical issues but is now back up and running; check out this article, when you get the chance.
