I love the way they simply slapped masking tape over the original stencils when the added the tan paint.

How do you tell its Tan from a Black and White photo? Or is it a known colour at the time?

57th FG P-40Fs were oversprayed with "desert sand" just prior to deployment to North Africa.

The 15th FG painted their P-40s "Coral" when deployed to various atolls in the PTO.

Sad. Was it the pilot in the photo? Of course, just because there's a name on the plane, I suppose that doesn't mean it's the same guy in the cockpit.

The underside color is almost certainly Nuetral Gray..it was the only officially specified USAAF underside color.* Azure Blue was only applied to aircraft intended as lend-lease for the Brits (some of which ended up in U.S. service.)

SN

*Other than occaisonally black for night ops or white for ASW.

I always was curious as to whether or not that "coral" color was something created in theater, or just the standard sand, also known at the time as "tittie pink." Some 7th AF P-39Qs also got the same paint job.

The Azure Blue was used on all P-40s that had upper surfaces painted in a finish similar to the RAF Sand/Middle Stone two tone pattern. Most later model P-40Fs(long fuselage) and P-40Ls sent to North Africa were painted that way.
