G'day folks,

The original is one of my top five favourite movies, and I've watched it many times. Have nearly worn out the novel also. The book gives a lot of background information and more depth to the characters

I'm going to sing outside the choir, to a degree, and say that I really enjoyed the remake as well. The movie is an escapist fantasy, and it's hard to get too hung up on technical mistakes. The fact that they went to the effort of reinterpreting the story for today was laudable. I'm glad it wasn't a slavish repeat of the original, as the original stands alone and there'd be no point in doing it the same way.

I find that I usually only go to the cinema for a couple of hours of escapism. Being a firearms owner and shooter means I either ignore the painful mistakes so often repeated, otherwise I'd just get cranky and annoyed. Action movies aren't technical instruction movies or training manuals.

I'd have to agree that the opening scenes of the C-119 growling along while Johnny Cash music played was very well done. As were the comical touches. The music in the original was brilliant and most evocative.

The book describes the cartridge-starting sequence almost exactly like in the movie, except that Stringer (Dorfmann in the film) doesn't blow up when Towns risks the cartridge ("steady, a clearer, with black-and-blue muck curling out of the exhaust").

I still have a partly-completed Phoenix I built from parts of the old Aurora C-119 kit back home; I'll post a photo soon.

The film of Mr. Mantz wadding up the "Phoenix" is very disturbing to watch.Blew me away first time I saw it.hard to watch.also which Attenborough brother was in the film? Richard or David? get them wrong all the time.one more thing.what was the Monkey's name?

When you have a classic movie such as this, I won't watch a "remake".

Now I'm not an engine guy, so my question to those who might know is...
would firing a cartridge off like that really "clean out" the engine so it might start better?

The same way that cranking it over with an electric starter would, by betting a better mixture more evenly distributed to the cylinders.
The gases from the cartridge inpinge on a turbine/impellerthat's geared to the engine, they don't enter the cylinders.

Yes.
44-23015 N6887C was used for flying shots
44-23031 and 23036 were used for the desert ground shots and the wings and tailboom for a R4Q-1 (USMC C-119) were used as well.

the premise of the movie is rather absurde.but can anyone come up with another film that is as much fantasy for any airplane buff(big round engines) as this movie.it blew me away as a kid,and I still love it.
