Some cartoons just don't work out they way I'd like. This one seemed like a good idea at the time, but proved otherwise. It was a pain in the hindquarters to draw, and I never did get the composition where I wanted it. Judging from the deafening silence that has ensued wherever I have posted it for comment, it didn't turn out to be as funny as I'd hoped, either. (My publisher gave it a pass, too, which reinforces that idea.) I'm convinced it could be funny, though, given the right line. Anybody have an idea for a cleverer quip?

Actually, I spat Diet Coke through my nose the first time I saw it, thought it was great.

Reminded me of the book "Warthogs" when some of the old timers used to say the airspeed indicator in the A-10 was a wall calendar...

That was my intention, to mock the slow speed of the hog. Unfortunately, I think the cartoon depends too much on esoteric knowledge of the A-10's performance to reliably draw a chuckle. Here 's an alternate version I thought of...anybody like this one better?

I think the second one definitely better than the first. From my perspective, having seeing just about every A-10 cartoon from the 1980 and 1990s, it reminds me a bit of this one from 1991. Granted it's not an A-10, but it's still funny:

So maybe for some folks, the theme of ragheads on camels being chased by jets is now passe. (Not for me, mind you... I find it infinitely humorous.)

Maybe the pilot could say: " This camel spits bullets!"

I think it should have the balloon on the camel, asking the other one "did we just pass something?"

i remember seeing a interstate billboard during the first Gulf War with a picture similar to Fritz's A-10. The caption was "I'd fly 8,000 miles to smoke a camel"

if I remember right it was west of Sioux Falls SD along I-90
