I was told today that several airplanes were scrapped due to salt water damage after the hurricane in Galveston TX. Do any of you know how many (if any)they sent to the smelter and what they were? I saw a Twin Beech AT-11 down there that looks great from a distance, but I was told that it has the death sentence of salt water flood corrosion.

Nothing has been hauled off as far as I know. Some things have been sold off. The Beech 18 has spar corrosion, not sure it's all Ike related.

They probaly got rid of some of the non authenitc stuff- There were a few replicas and non historic items that were already a little rough when they came to museum. Most of hte stuff that went away was suupport realated- things like maintenance carts, a shop truck (that was in great shape prior) a few trailers, etc etc.
I know first hand that Larry is totally committed to keeping everyting he can from teh scrap man. The few items taht were sold were done because they could go to folks with the resources to get them back in the air and fix them correclty. Case in point- I understand the F3F is making good progress at Nelsons and could be back in teh air soon. A much better fate than having it sit in a dark corner.
And of course even now that it has been a few years there is still A LOT TO DO and many items are still waiting to be retunred to there former glor so any help I am sure would be greatly be appreciated.

How odd that two of the crew there would tell me that they scrapped several planes.

Hopefully it was just the replica stuff that was scrapped. It is possible that the old guys I talked to might have just been a bit dramatic.

The F3F left Texas around 18 months ago

Jason - if you are indeed down in the Houston area, may I suggest you drive down there on a weekend and look for yourself? If you are that close, might be worth a look before you start throwing internet lightning bolts at them ....

Hold on now- no lightening bolts from me! I was down there and physically talked to an employee that told me all of this when I asked him what was the deal with the AT-11. I personally saw them throwing salt damaged parts into two large dumpsters and squishing them down into the dumpster all while I was standing there. That is what sparked the entire conversation. It made me a little sick to watch radial engines and other antique aircraft parts thrown into the huge 18 wheeler sized dumpsters (no airplanes-just smaller parts). Given that all of it was useless junk due to the salt damage, but it prompted me ask about the AT-11. And then, I received the stories from two employees about all the terrible destruction after the storm and what they had to do. I don't want to give the impression that they were enjoying scrapping the stuff. I'm sure it sickens them too. I just wanted to hear from those in the "know" what aircraft(if any) they had to scrap after the storm damage. It is always possible that the guys were just full of bull and that no airplane was ever scrapped out at the museum and that they just wanted to see how far down my jaw would drop.

If you're not throwing lighting bolts, then don't use the ALL CAPS at the end of the thread. This is considered to be yelling on the internet at most, and an emphasis at least, which makes it read like you're not happy about it.
A better way of titling the thread might have been - "Lone Star Flight Museum- Airplanes Scrapped?"
That way at least you're asking a question and not making a statement.

CAPFlyer is right from an internet etiquette standpoint...

I thought that me saying that I'm not throwing lightening bolts and just asking asking a question would have cleared that up.

I didn't intend to upset anyone. I value the opinion and the knowledge of everyone on here, that is why I posted the questions. I like knowledge and I would like more of it.
I changed the title to lower case letters.
