It's SIDEWALK CHALK, Chris. The kids used the stuff on a SIDEWALK. Stupidity with sidewalk chalk would be using it to decorate a cat. Disrespect using chalk would be to leave a nasty message concerning the veterans. I see neither in this case.

I am not a veteran, but have had a number of relatives who have both served and are now deceased. I cannot imagine a single one of them considering the use of sidewalk chalk for hopscotch or "Joni loves Chachi" as either stupid or disrespectful. I do imagine them saying, "You know what, I'm not mad, but some folks might get excited over your using chalk here, so just find a different spot and go enjoy your summer."

I would agree that the Chalk Incident is not in the same league as the other obvious acts of vandalism done with malicious intent. That would fall into the same category as scratching Mommy's car. That's just another sidewalk to kids that age. How would they know? They were playing hopscotch! Hardly criminals.

Now the others, yes, the call for 1000 hours of community service in the one article is a good start. Maybe if they're caught, the judge can "encourage" them to enlist to get a feel for what they obviously have no respect for.

That's one reason why, if your fence or garage gets 'tagged' by some KRYLON Rembrandt the quicker you paint it out, or pressure wash it (paint or pressure wash the whole panel not just the 'artwork' itself), so they see you mean business and their shining statement isn't visible any more they will move on to someone else's fence. It might take a few cycles for them to finally give up on you.
Most taggers have a recognised 'style' or 'flair' they like to repeat, so if the police are on the ball and stay vigilant, eventually they catch the little miscreant.

I am not saying that it is as bad as the guys that painted the Grissom Memorial, but I think there is a time and place for everything. As a parent, I think I would say something if my kid was playing hopscotch at the Vietnam Wall.

As a vet the last person I want serving next to me in a volunteer army is someone forced into it for any reason. It's a volunteer army for a reason. You can keep your cast offs thanks.

I'm with you on that. And I can only speculate that IF the children's (I'm guessing girls') parents knew where they were playing they would probably have done the same. But how can one become so incensed at what appears to be unintended offense by children?

Would you still consider it vandalism if the kids had chalked "Support Our Troops" on the sidewalk?
