Details are very few at this point but local media here in Chicago is reporting a WW2 vintage plane has crashed in Oswego,Ill and burst into flames. Thats all I have right now. Maybe someone else can provide more info because I'm out the door for work very soon.

Further info was just released on the Chicago Tribune's website. It is a B-17. Not good news at all. Which B-17 was at Aurora over the weekend? The plane in question took off from there and went down a short time later. It does not sound good at all.

Which B-17 was in the area?
Quote:
A vintage World War II bomber crashed and burned in a field southwest of Aurora this morning, but the seven people on board escaped without injury, according to aviation officials.

The plane, a B-17 known as a "Flying Fortress," took off from Aurora Airport at 9:30 a.m. and went down about three or four miles from Aurora about 20 minnutes later, according to Elizabeth Isham Corey. "The plane is burning. We believe the seven people on board escaped without injury."

The crash site was at Rte. 71 and Minkler Road in Oswego, officials said.

recheck the Tribune link - there's a picture of it burning. It is indeed Liberty Belle, and its a total loss.

Oh no. Wonderful to hear everyone got out. In the end that is what is most important.

Thank God everyone was able to get out.
It is a sad day but on the plus side, no lives were lost.

I quite literally feel sick to my stomach seeing that. Obviously I'm happy that everyone got out OK, but still... it's gut-wrenching to see.

Lynn

EDIT: Photo I took back in 2009 when she visited Chesapeake... what a beautiful morning that was, and what a wonderful experience it was to see her. She will be sadly missed.

I just saw it pop up on Facebook. Thank God they all got out!

What a huge loss to the Warbird movement though.

Man! it looks like there is nothing left but the tail and wings, I am amazed that everyone got out okay if the reports are true, 7 in total from last report. Very very sad day. :(
