"An unusual accident at the Alameda Naval Station Tuesday seriously damaged a newly restored jet that has been on display for over 40 years when the crane lifting the aircraft toppled over.
The A-4 Skyhawk jet greeted visitors to the Alameda Naval Station from 1969 until it was removed from its display stand for the recent restoration work.
The 42-ton crane was lifting the 5,500-pound aircraft back onto its pylon Tuesday afternoon when suddenly the crane tilted and crashed, dropping the plane to the ground."

Did you know that the U.S. Army had two A4's? 2 A4D-2N's (buairno 148483 & 148490) were modified with dual wheeled mains , requiring new, squarer main wheel doors and a drag chute. Both were evaluated in 1957 @ Ft. Rucker. They were flown off against the FIAT G-91 'Gina' and the NORTHROP N-156.
The Air Force stepped in and took the fixed wing ground attack mission away from the Army, so the 'Scooters' were reconfigured back to standard and returned to the Navy. They both kept all their Navy markings during the tests but the subjects would be a real 'SAY WHAT??' project for a modeller.

The Army also earlier on had at least 3 T-37's for evaluation, 63464, 63465, and 63466 were also tested @ Ft. Rucker carrying ARMY markings on both sides of the nose.

The city of Alameda put in $50,000 and the restoration crew put in two years worth of work just to have it dropped like that...heart breaking. Somebody on that crane crew probably lost their job on that one. Now they are saying it looks like another two years of work...wow.

...how early of an A-4 is this and how many of this model are left? Sure looked pretty...except where it was gouged out by the crane. Yikes.

If you are going to quote me, please use the FULL quote- I said I would leave it alone, and I did. Bad quoting by the media is one of the reasons we have these messes. Didn't need a request to do what I'd already done. Since you brought it up, it is because they misreported the aircraft that the statement about the media I was responding to got made, and I merely said I agreed, that the media, through misreporting, intentional misrepresentation and out & out ignoring certain facts, has led to bad situations. I spouted no "irrelevant claptrap". To reiterate my second, and final, statement,"[Rick H's] statement speaks VOLUMES."

Most of that airframe's new injuries could be rectified in a matter of hours by installing a new tail section.

How did they differ between the early/late models?

Smaller intakes for the smaller engine, or at least lesser rated, no hump for avionics. Cute airplane, sleek. Hope they get it fixed soon.
