I have been listening to and enjoying many of the shows on Warbird Radio lately. Some of the guests are very interesting people. But something has been bugging me for a while. There are adverts in all the shows for something called Tommy's Hotdog Salad. What the heck is this?
Apparently it comes in a can?
I did a Google and cannot find any reference to this delicacy.
And the adverts state "Made with 100% hotdog meat". Huh? I thought hotdog meat was snouts and entrails, I never knew it was a meat on its own.
Here in NZ hotdogs are either a battered sausage on a stick dipped in tomato sauce, or they follow the American tradition of being a smaller German-style sausage in a long bun. Both are great. But in a salad, out of a tin? My mind is boggling. Is this an in-joke hoax advert or is it a real product? I'd like to see a photo of it please.

I thought it was what happens to a "hotdog" when, "Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash".

Hmmmm...sounds like the 'delicacy' some guys used to make on deployment overseas: Cup O' Dog....a hot dog boiled in a cup in the microwave.
Tex-Mex Cup O' Dog if you tossed a little salsa into the cup.

Thanks Dave, I'd just eaten a pork pie for my lunch when I read that!
Oh, the joys of being back in the UK for a while - pork pies, cornish pasties and proper bacon!

And, of course, lots and lots of Spitfires.

the recipe is available on line (actually several) basically shredded cabbage, shredded romaine lettuce, diced garlic pickles, a few other condiment type spices and sliced lengthwise dogs seared in a frying pan, pile the cabbage lettuce mix on a plate and layer the sliced dogs on top.
Not sure about a brand called TOMMYS, but can't see canned slaw and lettuce being really tasty.

I can remember being similarly confused about "Buffalo" Wings until I tried and liked them.

Now why did that old buffalo wings commercial featuring Jessica Simpson just flash across my mind?
Anyone want a little brain salad surgery? (you'd need to be a Dr. John fan)

Tommy's Hotdog Salad is apparently a corporation with VERY deep pockets, intent on putting all other hotdog salad vendors under by the end of the year, predominantly through their unprecedented advertising campaign.
