Wonder if he was an ex-military pilot?
Sounds likely, otherwise a Stearman seems like an odd GA plane uness he was a warbird or antique fan.
I vaguely recall that after MASH he did a sitcom where his character was a retired military officer who was building a homebuilt in the garage, so being a pilot makes sense.
In the early 90s, the Hollywood (LA) Air Force liasion office hosted a tour of bases so celebrities and (especially) screenwriters could see the USAF up close and Linville was on that tour. I met him when they stopped at Wright-Pat for some briefings. Seemed like a nice guy.
