B-17 nose fitting question

Mon Jul 11, 2011 6:38 am

Does anyone know what the small bracket seen on the left of this photo is for?
There is a matching one on the other side of the nose, and they can often be seen in wartime photos.

Retaining points for a canvas cover for the nose perhaps?

All the best,

I was wondering about that too when I saw it on Bomberflight's thread. I was guessing it was for the canvas cover for the chin turret cover but its pure speculation.

That's an interesting question. I wondered if B-17s and B-24s had similar attaching hardware for those covers, and so I was looking at some close-up photos of B-24s I have that show the covers in place and then show them removed on the same aircraft. At least on a Douglas-Tulsa-built (Ford knock-down kit) B-24, they appear to be snaps or small fasteners instead of clips. Anyone else have info on this little puzzle?
