The problem is there are no decals available, meaning the builder would have to make their own, or hand-paint the nose art. Fortunately, Mustangdriver is working to rectify that..check the thread in the modeling forum about B-17 Warbird Decals.

I've been through this thread a number of times now and I still can't get away from the thought that the crew escaped alive. If I were a believer in miricles, well, this would come close.

That overhead photo just hurts my heart to see. But, there are an awful lot of usable parts there... fuselage structures can be fully scratchbuilt as demonstrated by "Champaign Lady", the tail unit is almost completely salvageable, the engines and props can clearly be rebuilt, the port outer wing is intact and the starboard outer looks like it can be rebuilt, and much of the nacelle and main gear structures appear to be usable as well. Maybe.

I'm sure we have not seen the last of her.

Thanks for posting the photo.

That's one seriously lonely-looking fire extinguisher.

Never thought I'd see an image like this in color...feathered prop and all.

A little hero affection here, but...I still think a lot of warbird pilots are the best pilots in the world! The crew obviously did a grand, professional job bringing her down safely! :drink3: :drink3:

I think the miracle in this case was the fact that on this departure the 'Belle just happend to have a chase plane. The pilot spotted the fire early, knew it was bad and communicated that to the crew; "FIRE! PUT IT DOWN NOW!!!"

The fact also that there were numerous fields to pick from that could accomodate a landing B-17. Change any one of these and the outcome would have been much different. Would the crew alone have known the fire was out of control? Would they have gone back to the field? What if the airport was in the middle of surburbia like SMO? I still shake my head at this one and say wow they were lucky.

One thing for sure, if I ever have the opportunity to ride in a B-17 or any warbird for that matter, I will have a much greater respect for it, the crew, and what could go wrong even with 4 engines.

I keep looking at the Liberty Foundation web site from time to time hoping there will be an update on there plans going forward.

Just as the EAA loaned Fuddy Duddy whilst Aluminum Overcast was out of commission ~ I was sort of hoping we would see the Liberty Belle team
back out on the road with a loaned B-17 ......

Maybe that's not a practical daydream on my part though

Sure there lots of usable part to include in a flying project ?

Any news on the "Labrador Lake recovered" B17 ?
