Momma gets a new coat of paint! C-47 Oxford, CT

Just back last Monday from being painted in Canada.
Douglas C-47A-40-DL 42-24064, c/n 9926, N-74589 now in it's original D-Day night markings!
It flew the CHICAGO mission which was the 0400 glider lift to LZ E on June 6, 1944.

To all those wondering, they did not paint the stripes sloppy, but they did use a brush for the black and the white paint. I hope you can see the brush strokes in this photo.


I have to apologize for the photo quality. My good camera is broken and I only had my wife's little digital with me. It's planned to debut at OSH next week. If I can catch it outside the hangar I'll post some more pics.
She does look fantastic!

Absolutely fantastic! I can hear the conversation on the tarmac now, "So, this is painted up like the one?"...."No, sir, this is THE one. Painted up just as it was that day." And the hand painted stripes? Like icing on the cake!

Now if only there was a spare CG-4 to drag behind... ; )

Thanks for doing the stripes 'Auld Skool', It looks great!!!too bad the CFR's require the yellow exit bands. Now if everyone got together @ Geneseo or TOM, or Oshkosh that would be impressive and one heck of a formation.

I witnessed a 21 C-47 train flying into N.O. Lakefront back in the mid 70's enroute from Tucson to Florida, only two had working radios imagine the tower conversation 'Ah..Lakefront tower.... XXXDelta with a flight of 21 for landing' Wonderful noises

I hope to get to see her soon. I love OD goonie birds. Refueled several silver ones while in the USAF, but was way too late for the OD ones.

At one time, the CAF had a couple of glider airframes and some ribs ffrom a wing. They used somee of the parts for a museum display, but may still have the others soomewhere. it might be worth aa phone call or email to ask. As I remember, there was only one style of wing rib used for thee entire 130 ft. wingspan. So, if you could get one rib for a sample it's not hard to imagine building a whole wing. The possibilitiess are endless.

Regarding the CAF and the CG-4: Way, way back (mid/early 80s) I went to the Glider Pilots Museum when it was in Terrell, Texas. One Saturday my dad, brother and I had the place to ourselves and a couple of old glider pilots who were just happy we were there. I recall distincly that they'd mentioned giving enough CG-4 bits to the CAF to get a good start on buliding at least one glider, if not two, and seemed more than a little miffed that it hadn't happened. Of course, I was a very young fellow then and had no idea what the inside scoop was. But I've often wondered since what the backstory was.

That being said, at the time there was a wonderfully complete CG-4 on display (which I believe is in Lubbock now) and a cockpit section on a trailer out back of the hangar (no idea what happened to it). Different times.

IIRC, the museum at Midland has a glider on display inside a little room. I don't remember if it had wings or not.
