Herman Spoede was a member of the Hellhawks Squadron when he made his last flight on July 3, 1943.

According to military records posted on Dan McAnarney's web site, visibility was zero that day, and it's believed Spoede's radio could transmit but not receive messages.

I don't see any mystery being solved here, but it is a good story.

The mystery was the identity of the pilot. The artist said he didn't know the name of the pilot, and only recently was the name discovered, and the painting given to the pilot's family.

That was a really poorly written article about what I'm sure is an interesting story. I hate journalistic writing. They teach them to write like that in school, hitting the main points and then digressing into details. It's very non-linear and lousy for story-telling...especially mysteries.

There are over a dozen comments to the article, and most of them express confusion as to what the mystery is. That's a journalistic fail.

As far as I can tell, it was actually a website that helped solve the mystery.

It probably got edited into nothingness by a bad editor.
