What kind of biplane was used in movie "The Misfits"? I'm guessing Meyers OTW since it had metal fuselage. Whatever it was it used a 5 cylinder engine.

Not familiar with the movie, but a Meyers OTW is eqiupped with a Warner engine and a Meyers OTK would have the five cylinder Kinner.

It's an old black and white movie released about 1961 featuring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. The Meyers OTK sounds like the one. I googled it and it definitely looked like a Meyers bipe although the website didn't show the Kinner powered version.

The Warner engine on the Meyers OTW is also a five cylinder engine ranging from 140 hp to the super Scarab at 165 hp.

Don't recall the movie, but lot's of Stearmans and Naval Aircraft N3N's were metalized for dusting, etc, post-war.

Thanks Roger,

I never really paid enough attention to Warners to realize that they were also five cylinder radials!

No problem, I'm not an engine guy either, but that five cylinder has always caught my attention.

Here is a shot of a Kinner powered Meyers OTW. The Kinner is a very pronounced 5 cylinder!

I don't know of any 5 cylinder Warners, the 110-165hp are all 7 cyl. Here is a pic of one at Rhinebeck. http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/collection/ ... Scarab.htm

Hey Glen, come to Polk City, I'll show you a few.

5 cylinder radial would likely be either the Kinner or Wright J6-5. The J6-5 is a neat little engine, 165hp, supercharged.

That definitely looks like the same bird. Multistrut gear, tail shape, etc. all look right. Heck, even the N number looks close to the one used in the movie. I think it was 34350 but it was on TV so I couldn't freeze the pic get a nice long look.

There was a Myers OTW at the Airshow at Nashua two weekends ago. If you check out my web-shots page (link below) and go to the Daniel Webster’s Aviation Fest 2005 there should be a picture of one, assuming that it was properly uploaded.

If not I'll post a few shots when I can (tonight hopefully) If anyone is interested.

jack you are dead on.. i have been running kinner's and warners for 30 years and the warners are 7 cyl the kinners are 5 cyl. the kinners are very easy to start with the left impulse and the warners will bite as they have no impulse. i have lost the use of a hand or two over the years for a few days from the warners biting back and getting my knuckles. never come close to that problem with the kinners.. the wright J6-5 is also a 5 cyl eng and other the usual problems assosiated with the wright's it's a good eng..

jcw,

I stand corrected, there was a 5 cyl. Warner, it was a Scarab 40 developed 90hp, basically a 125 with 5 cyls. Not very popular.

i guess i stand corrected also then... i have been playing with this stuff a very long time and have a very large kinner inventory and i have never run across any 90 warner parts or even seen a warner 40. never seen any manuals for them either and i have all the manuals for the small radials. i'll have to check into it and find out how many they made...
