THE warbird seen most in pop culture, movies etc

Tue Aug 09, 2011 10:48 am

I was thinking yesterday what warbird we have seen the most in pop culture, movies, books, etc.

The only one I come up with is my favorite the P-40! :D

Just a few that I can think of:

Dogfights
Torax3
Midway
Sky Captain
God is my Copilot
Air Force
Flying Tigers
Pearl Harbor
Hellfighters(with John Wayne)
Several Flight sims and computer games featuring the P-40
Front page covers of warbird calenders
Valkyrie
1941
Many wartime advertisments.

Not bad for the old Warhawk. :)

Also for the P-40:
Waiting for Dublin

And don't forget some of the P-40's in TV movies:

"Birds of Prey"
"Death Race" (aka in Canada "State of Division")
"Flying Misfits", Baa, Baa, Black Sheep Pilot Film

I'm sure there's more!

I would say the P-51 Mustang. It is the plane that simply everyone knows. If you tell someone a P-40, chances are they have no idea what you are talking about. If you say Flying Tigers, then they get it. But the Mustang is one that everyone knows. I would say close seconds are the B-17, C-47, and the Spitfire.

The way some people see it, the only fighters during WWII where the P-51, Corsair, Zero, Spit and ME109 and the Flying Tiger plane, really, that is how someone once described it to me!

As for Bombers, only the B-17 and B-25 ever did anything! Ze Germans and the Japanese used only Zero's and Messoschmits!

Is that maybe because by the time some of those movies were made they were second-rate fighters and were available for use in the movies...

Hi Chris,

You are talked about the probable best known warbird from WW2. Which I agree. But I ment in terms of publication, movies, etc.

Could the first movie to use T-6's as Zero's be "God is my copilot"?

I havent seen Air Force in awhile but you are probably correct. Although I remember P-43's being used as Zero's. More or less stock footage of a fast flying P-43.
