P-38 Joltin' Josie

Thu Sep 29, 2005 9:12 am

Help me...help me...
I'm looking for Fighter Group and Squadron info on Joltin' Josie. (44-23314)
I know 44-23314 is flying as Porky II now.
I'm 99% sure the Group was 20FG but 20FG had 3 Squadrons (77, 78 &79).
I need to know which.

I don't believe the name Joltin' Josie ever existed on a combat veteran:

Joltin Josie, Now Porky II, was not an accurate paint scheme. It was representative of an 8th AF paint job. Josie is the name of Mr Bob Pond's wife.
Porky II was the aircraft of Maj. Ed Craig, SQ CC 80th FS, 8th FG, 5th AF.
The old Spam Can paint of the yellow tail with black stripes was accurate, of a squadron that flew out of Iwo Jima. 508th FS I think (I'm on a trip, will check when I get home.) Spam Can is now painted in the 4th fighter group colors of ace Maj. Goodson.

P-38

Bob Pond named practicly every plane after his wife Jo. but, there was a B-29A named "Joltin Jose-The Pacific Pioneer" which is where the actual name came from. The basic marking could cover a number of P-38 groups ie 20/55/474/479/364 ect.

OK troops....call off the search. I changed my mind as to the artwork on an A-2 jacket. Was gonna' use "Joltin' Josie". Now gonna' use Capt. Jack Ilfrey's "Happy Jack's Go Buggy".
I know he was 20FG 79FS "The Loco Busters" out of Kingscliffe, England.

Mudge,
Jack Ilfrey was a good friend and a great guy! but a number of people have recreated his jacket. i would suggest another 20th FG pilot. I can give you loads of ideas. Capt "Ingy" Ingebrigtsen and Lt "Cactus Jack" Yelton are my favorites.

Jack...Thanks for the suggestion but....
1) Ingebrigtsen flew a P-51 and I want a P-38.
(Man....doesn't his picture look like he'll be 16 on his next birthday?)

2) Can't find any color pictures of "Cactus Jack".

3) I have a great picture of "Happy Jack" for the artist to copy.

I was close to Jack as well and I think it's a great tribute to him that you are creating.

Are you planning to recreate Jack's jacket or just use the nose art from his P-38? The reason I ask is because the jacket he wore during the war didn't have anything on the back of it.
