Franz Stigler's ME-108 C-GRIT

My ME-108 post got lost in the discussion of German light a/c so I thought I'd post a new thread. Here's a shot I took at flight craft when Franz flew down one weekend. He sold it in the early 80s and the new owner crashed it. A chap named Ben Sampson in Australia purchased it and was rebuilding it. Does anyone know the current status. BTW I believe it was a Nord with a Renault engine. Sorry for the poor quality photo. You can only do so much with a 110 camera.

Here is Franz, sitting with Bud Granley at Abbotsford in August. Franz is a super nice guy and it's been a real treat to get to know him.

Hi Brad,
Your right Franz is a great guy. We used to go up and stay with him and his wife Hiya ever so often. He started out his flying career flying flying boats in Africa. He must have the hardest head in the world having that .50 cal bounce off his forehead! He said he was shot twice by B-17 tailgunners before he figured out the head on attack was the best way to go after the Forts. It was cool flying with him in his Messerscnmitt!!

BF-109F-4 #2 and #12 of the 6th Squadron IIJG-27 Berlin Bears
in Africa and Italy. JV-44 flying ME-262 flew #3 I believe. 28 kills
and around 40 probables.

The aircraft in question, VH-OFS is alive and well following its little mishap in 2000. Metal work repairs are complete and fit out of systems is taking place.

Return to flight will occur next year after the new restoration shop at the HARS Museum complex at Albion Park, south of Sydney, is completed.

If anybody out there knows a source for replacement tyres please advise or a succesfull trye/brake conversion would be good.

On the CAF Fi-156D, we used T-34 Master Cylinder's with a little luck. The main problem was with the wheel cylinders as they leaked all the time. Doug Jeanes would know more about it.

Cheers,

Lynn
