Best movie attack/combat scene

My favorite is in Saving Private Ryan. When they are about to blow the bridge and the German tanks are approaching. Suddenly the tank blows up as Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) is shooting at it. Then you hear the beautiful roar of the Merlins as a couple P-51s fly over. When it gets to that scene the surround sound is cranked and at least one of my kids is asking to back it up and play it again. I know it's not a very long scene but the sound of the merlins is so impressive and makes me wonder the fear the Germans felt when they heard it.

Again; not warbirds, but I love when Arnold and the boys open-up with everything they have for like two minutes on the Predator.

Tora Tora Tora gets my vote. A close second is " They were Expendable" using real pt boats directed by John Ford. What great Naval action.

But what about the Belushi-flown P-40 scene in "1941"???

Same movie, I always questioned the scene where Belushi is captured by a Japanese submarine, cranked for comedic effect -- we all know what would have happened to such a captured pilot in the real war.

Slim Pickens was captured by the sub.Remember his name was "Hollis Woods" and the Japanese kept asking wheres hollywood and he would say here I am.He had a compass from a box of cracker jacks and when the japanese sub compass died ,he swallowes it and they were waiting for him to pass it.Of course ,they would have dissected hinm for it.its been a long time since I've seen the movie.only remember Slim on the sub.but could be wrong

I think an honorable mention should go to the SAM dodging scene in "Behind Enemy Lines"...that was pretty intense.

My favourite scene is the opening sequence of Battle of Britain, where the Bf 109 attack the airfield in France (starting where the British soldier holds the burning cloth). At around 4:58 till 5:30. I especially like the very low flying scenes, one of the best scenes in the whole film IMHO (see 5:20, just over the fence). And: no CGI, just simple conventional flying.

That gets my vote too... the guy leading that attack was a Spanish pilot who'd flown 109's on the Russian Front if I recall. The lead '109 is literally trimming the grass when he comes in. Also, some of the flying scenes in Piece of Cake... especially when Ray Hanna flies his Spitfire under the bridge... are fabulously filmed as well.

I had made a simiilar posting in a previous thread about that scene...and was lambasted by a couple people on this site because the bullet squibs on the ground were not properly timed with the passing of the planes over head.

Did you just miss the Buchon coming in at a height that was Bob Love-worthy????

I'm willing to overlook the timing of the squibs for a bunch of Buchons beating up the field like that.

Belushi rides the motorcycle off the end of the pier at the end of the movie and climbs on the sub. He's taken captive and tells the submariners to take him to Tokyo.

I thought the combat scenes in William Wyler's "Memphis Belle" movie were uncannily realistic.

Sorry...I couldn't resist that one.

My vote goes to Battle of Britain. One of the scenes I clearly recall is the shot from inside the He-111 where crew that looks to the left and sees their left engine stopping, and then looks to the right and sees the right engine stopping. That scene really captures the terror the aircrews must have felt when under fighter attack.

Since 1941 has been brought up, I thought the funniest line in that movie was when the two Japanese sailors are trying to get Hollis Woods' huge radio into the subs hatch was wasn't going to work. The one guy scratches his head and says "We're going to have to find a way to make these things smaller."

My vote, although a short sequence, goes to the strafing scene with the P-51 in Hart's War.
