I dropped by Paine Field at lunch today to take a look at the CAF/Airizona Wing's "Maid in the Shade" B-25J and B-17G "Sentimental Journey" (and left some donation money there with them; thanks for the excellent tour, guys!), and just by chance caught the take-off of one of the ME-262s they have abuilding there at Paine Field.

Sorry, no photos, but I was wondering...anyone know what aircraft number this was and who the new owner is? I'm guessing they are flying off the pre-cert time?

Thanks in advance for posting anything you might know about current ops.

It also flew early last week, should be #4, customer, if they have one is a deep, dark secret. Essentially the airframe has been complete for a couple of years awaiting engines, etc.

Will they announce when it's coming this way? I think I'll need to be in Va Beach for that. :D

Will the grass strip at Pungo support the 262? That is one full Luftwaffe hangar and they haven't even put it up yet.

That was my thought. Even if they could get it down and stopped, could they get back out of there?

Well, I believe 262s flew off grass during the war. How much runway do these "new" 262s use? Pungo is 5,000 x 190.

Luftwaffe defector Hans Fey estimated turf take-off run at 3300-4200 feet.

Good read:

According to Wolf Czaia, the Me262 test pilot for Legends Flyers at Paine, they won't be operating it from the grass at Pungo due to risk of foreign object ingestion into the low-slung engine intakes.

I think getting stopped would take more room than taking off on turf. With the extra thrust of the J85/CJ610, I think getting off the ground would not be a problem in 5000'. We have found that with maximum breaking we can get it stopped in about 3000' on pavement.

I agree that the big issue is the engine intakes that are only about 36 inches off the ground. It would be sucking in all kinds of grass clippings and anything else that happens to be hiding in the grass at full power.

Do you really think that squirrels would do much damage?

Well thats a shame! Looks like they need to buy some more land to add a paved runway in addition to the turf one.
