Inspection Stamp help required....

Sat Aug 20, 2011 12:16 am

Hi all,

New here...

Am having trouble with this inspection stamp. I think its a 'castle bromwich' inspection stamp but am unsure and need someone to confirm it...

Granted the stamps are not very clear but they are as clear as I could get them... oh there is also a part number if that helps... Is 26 a Prefix for the Spitfire or is that 300???

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

The numbers pictured don't seem to represent Spitfire P/Ns. I only have access to a limited number of drawings and only work on one model, the type 394 or Mk XVIII so my knowledge may be a bit limited, also I'm in the USA so anything I say British based should be taken at your own risk.
The early Spit numbers do start with 300 and if that part was changed or was a new part for a later model it would increase. Spit Mk XVIII was 394.
A part number would typically be 5 digits with a / and then another number such as 300XX/5 as an example. The XX numbers would pertain to a system, airframe area. You could have a 30044, 35144, 39444 ect. Same system or airframe area but different model.
The /XX number then becomes more specific and the Spare Parts Manual would refer to a drawing sheet number that would list that part and what system or airframe part it is installed in.
There is also parts for items not made by Supermarine but installed by them, engines and such. Typically they will also have an AM or Air Ministry stamp embossed with a part number.
Don't know how many things would have a serial number in addition to a P/N.
What type of part is this?
Welcome aboard and good luck.

Hi,

The part looks like an Exhaust cover or something to do with the engine and is a very solid piece of aluminium, so yes those part numbers may pertain to the engine. It has 4 counter sunk screw holes on each side and looks like a knee pad in shape. I have several pieces of this aircraft what ever it is and am trying to identify it... This was the only piece that has any part numbers or inspection stamps, apart from the usual HT 11 in a circle stamps indicated heat treatment. I will post an image of it when I have time to upload.

Thanks for your welcome and your post....

Hi all

After much research and hair pulling I have discovered what this part is from... It is indeed a part manufactured by Castle Bromwich for a Spitfire. It is a shield for the tail wheel and sits just forward of the wheel. It is pictured here in this picture I found online. Included is a picture of the whole part. 26 on the part refers to the Tail Skid assembly section on the Spitfire... Thanks to those who replied to my post.
