Spitfire experts, what am I looking at here?

I did a Google image search for Spitfire cockpits, none of the wartime manual photos that I came across showed this black box.

A buddy of mine sent me some pictures of this same item installed in TE565 which is a Mk.IX on display in Prague. So far as I can tell the airplane went straight from service into the museum and has never been restored or civilianized in any way. Food for thought. At this point I'm relatively confident that it is the fuel pump suppressor and it is stock equipment.

The suppressor I have found, is installed on aircraft that have the Pulsometer fuel pump installation carried out under mod 877. This mod was found on a lot of the IX's and XVI's. I do not have a copy of that particular mod and would love to get a copy if anyone has it. It may very well say on the mod sheet that the suppressor needs to be installed in conjunction with the pump.
The picture posted earlier looks to be a Mark V. In this case the builder of the aircraft may have installed a lower fuel tank with the bottom mounted Pulsometer pump instead of the top mount long necked one. Pure speculation on my part, but would explain why you see a suppressor on that aircraft.
