Warbird Information Exchange

I flew the T-6 into Santa Barbara (KSBA) this weekend and was very surprised to see a silver Dornier (I think) 3 engined flying boat sitting on the ramp near Signature. Is this airplane based there and what kind of airplane is it. I took a picture from far away (while I was trying to taxi) don't know how good it is.

Sounds like the Do-24; I wrote a bit about when it was here in the UK last year...

The Dornier Do-24ATT is on a world tour. Damiens excellent report doesn't mention that the other big change (engines from pistons to turboprops, a new wing) was the addition of an undercarriage from the Dornier Do-31 (yes, look it up) making it the first amphibian of the type. Perviously Dornier Do-24s had all been pure flying boats.

I saw an article in In Flight about the Dornier that said it was rewinged and re-engined in the Phillipines.
Wasn't it done in Germany in the 80s...or was that another airframe?

The Do-24ATT was a 70s technology prototype by Dornier, Germany. The put the 'new' Dornier wing on it (later used in the other Do types IIRC), plus the gear and turboprops to see if there was a market for an undated 24 (It's one of the most seaworthy 'boats ever).

There wasn't, and it cost Dornier too much.

Iren Dornier took the aircraft from the museum, refurbished it and did it out as a luxury a/c inside in the Philippines, where he lives.
