Wonder what the reaction would be if P51B 'Shangri-La' was recovered, restored and was painted as a ficticious RAF scheme. Sure there would be a negative reaction on that from those that like to see originality.

The issue here seems to be that her only history is whilst in Soviet colours.

So it is not just American airframes though those Russian Hurricanes restored have been completed in an authentic RAF relevant to the airframe. (Hurricane P3351 being an example).

I am still looking forward to seeing a Hurricane in Soviet colours and am glad to know John Norman is restoring Hurricane AM274 in Soviet colours.

You know, ten years ago, I would've said you were nuts. But now, they're building brand spanking new 262s, pulling all sorts of stuff out of Russia, etc., etc.

I know you meant it tongue in cheek, but stranger things have happened!

OK, yes it was part of the Chinese Air Force, but the American Volunteer Groups were, as I understand it, organised and supplied by the US Government to aid China and the aircrews were made up from US citizens, right?

Yes you're correct, my mistake. The AVG did not go into combat till after the 7th of December 1941 attack on Hawaii. I had forgotten that. But as I understand it the AVG was absorbed into the USAAF, was it not, and then went on to become the first US unit to fly daily ops against the Japanese? I may be wrong as this is not an area of my expertise so I'm happy to be corrected, and sorry if I am misguided here.

And a point of fact that I often have to point out on US forums is the Pacific War started long before the Americans were bombed at Pearl Harbor, as did WWII. The entry of the Japanese into the war with America and the British Empire and the Dutch and other Allied nations merely ramped it up somewhat. But there were several naval battles between the Allies and the Germans in the Pacific long before America came on duty in the war.

Strictly speaking, the Japanese were at war in the Pacific since 1931 (invasion of Machuria), which far pre-dates even the allied combat with the Germans in the Pacific.

Cheers,
Richard

Indeed, that is correct, but in terms of what I mentioned originally, WWII, the war in the wider Pacific region really started in mid 1940 when the German Navy sent raider ships to attack Allied shipping.

I have not yet found any proof of this but I wonder if the Japanese were providing assistance to those German ships in terms of safe harbour, fuel and supplies at any time. I do know the German radiers did make attacks on our ships under the disguise of looking like 'nuetral' Japanese fishing vessels. A merchant sailor from my home town, Cambridge, was killed in that raid.

Probably sitting around pondering how something else that happened 20 years ago just happened yesterday. Total timewarp vortex!

Still, this sentiment pairs up with the Il-2 thread quite nicely, eh?

I can do you a non-flying replica (temporarily) in Soviet colours (note also their Stuka replica further down the page).

I'm going to throw in my vote for the AVG tigershark paint on this P-40C for several reasons. And I know these are all personal reasons, but hey, it's what I feel. While it may be a missed opportunity to return it to Russian colors, I absolutely love it in it's AVG hollywierd water paints as it's been flying around here for years. Reminds me of my childhood Monogram P-40B AVG model, which is a good feeling in and of itself. So score one point for "mid-50's kid feel-good".

Also, the AVG is one of America's GREAT stories...one that never grows old in the retelling. I far prefer that to the feeling I get seeing red stars on every Chinese and Russian trainer I see flying around here. This is personal, I know, but I signed on the dotted line in the '70's to give my all against the reds in the cold war; and while I know it's over (supposedly, anyway), I still don't get a warm fuzzy seeing that red star. Especially on an American-built warbird, and especially considering the way things are going with Russia and China these days. And I make no apologies for being a dyed-in-the-wool American who enjoys seeing AMERICAN colors on an American-built warbird; that's just the way I am.

I'm going to be very happy seeing an authentically painted AVG-schemed P-40 flying in the skies over my home near Paine Field. Way to go, Paul Allen and FHC!

If it were mine I'd go with the XP-40 paint scheme.

I vote for Pink paint, sharks teeth, invasion stripes, tramp stamp on both sides and the name of a waitress from the local Denny's! All this in a really cool Jet Ski style paint job!

In other words, not my plane!

I had something like that in mind too but it's already been done I've seen it with my own eyes. I like the natty look like the Maude P-40.
