New Battle of Britain Film

I personally think that they could do a lot of the shots with actual aircraft, and high quality, large scale models. There are plenty of British fighters around to represent the RAF, and enough Me-109's as well. The real aircraft can be placed in the foreground, with CGI effects aircraft out of focus in the background.

The aircraft no longer flyable, such as He-111's and Ju-88's could be built as mock-ups on the ground, and for the flying... large scale models. And before you shrink at the idea of large scale models... just remember how convincing some of the firefighting sequences were in "Always"... especially the explosions. The original BofB film used models in abundance as well... some of it convincing (like the large scale Spitfire that crashes into the beach) and some less so (the Junkers Ju-87's attacking the radar station). Personally, I don't like the idea of in-your-face CGI in a film like this, but it can be very convincing when used sparingly and in the background. I just hope the film gets made. The screen writer is a real pro... as is the producer... so I am sure they will do a very creditable job if they get the chance to green-light the movie.

Then I'm pretty sure you won't be interested in watching this one. There's no way anyone's going to be able to recreate the scenes with actual a/c. That many Hurricanes, Spitfires and 109s in the air at once. I don't think so. Not to mention He-111s, Ju-87s, and Ju-88s of which I don't think there are any left in flying condition.

There were not any "real" Ju.87s or 88s in the original Battle of Britain movie.

Yes, I know. I'm just not into that much "minutiae". They were, however, closer than anything we'll see in the new movie.

There were some grand Stuka-related schemes that came to nothing much during the making of BoB; what is now the RAF Museum's Ju87G was going to be made taxiable for filming, and at least one Percival Proctor was reworked into a Stuka lookalike, cranked wings and all. The Stukas-versus-radar station sequence ended up a much smaller deal in the actual film, with models taking the place of "Proctukas" and no preflight closeups with the Ju87G...pity.

(I can see it now: a gleaming silver P-51 leading the Spitfires into battle...with a cameo by L. Ron Hubbard as an extraterrestrial AWACS driver...)

To be fair to Tom C, he has excellent taste in old airplanes; and his 1986 star turn in "Top Gun" did spark off quite a wave of interest in aviation among the younger set back in the day...I well recall that film as the last one I ever saw in a big old single screen theatre.
