MiG-3s

Can anybody update me on the status of the MiG-3s undergoing in restoration?
I understand was was to be at MAKS.

...and of course...

How many survivors and what their serial numbers?

Hi Wolverine !!!

The fisrt MiG-3 (c/n° 4958) , was recovered from a site within the Arctic Circle in 2000, where it had forced-landed during combat.
It was present at show MAKS 2005 for a static presentation.
The Aviarestavratsiya company are now working to resolve the engine replacement requirement as soon as possible and get the fighter flying again.
The second MiG-3 is for Jerry Yagen and its "Fighter Factory", it should fly for the summer 2006 !!

JANSSONNE, thanks for the update. Do you know the details about the
failure of the AM-38 on the first Mig? Will they replace the AM-38F with a
powerplant of a different type?

The AM38 was intended for this first MiG ( it was fitted to later examples but was mainly a IL-2 engine ) Other examples to be built will run Allisons.
This example has not flown at all to date.

I'd also like to know about the one that was going(?) to Monino...

Should these be considered replicas?

I only have the serial already mentioned, but will ask if any others were discovered. I haven't heard that any are going to Monino and I seriously doubt it as they already have a scale replica MiG, not only that Monino could scarcely afford to purchase one.
Quite a bit of structure was recovered from 6 different crash sites, but I would say the first example is a 'rebuild' whilst the follow on aircraft would probably be under the heading 'reproduction' with some original parts' in my opinion.

Thanks Dave for clarifying my question...some. The Mig-3 has not flown?
I have followed this project for a year or so, and was aware from the onset that they chose to power #4958 with the low-altitude AM-38F, as
opposed to the much rarer AM-35.My question was, what happened to the
38F? It looked so good in the test-cube last year!! Will they change over
to an Allison also on 4958? I understand "going Allison" is an easier
solution to powering the Mig-3, but it is disappointing as far as the loss
of a unique chance to hear what the Mikulin would sound like. The 38F
was tested in the Mig-3 in WW2, so it's not a question of originality.

The DB605, the Hispano in the Morane replica, the Sakae at POF have
all proven that they have an unforgettable sound to themselves...
I was hoping to hear what the AM-38F had to offer...just one bird.....
The rest can be Allisons for the replica-folks, but it would be nice to
see/hear the real deal!
