Great American roll model? Hero? An American's, American?

Not sure Glenn ever worked in a bakery...

What impresses me most about him is his marriage. When he got out of the hospital a few years back, there were shots of him and his wife, Annie, showing them holding hands like they had just met the week before. I have never not seen them like that.

As a man who has done as well at marriage as Germany has at world wars, I admire, thank and bless him, and them, for being a living testimony for what I still hope to have for myself.

While a Senator, he owned a flew a Baron. Well done!
He flew R4Ds and Corsairs in WWII, and of course his well-documented F-86 in Korea. I've read that the F8U Crusader was a favorite.

And its worth noting that Howard Metzenbaum, his opponent in the 1974 Ohio Democrat Senate primary race attacked him for "Never having a real job".
He said Metzenbaum should find a "... Gold Star mother and you look her in the eye and tell her that her son did not hold a job." Again, well done.

The film The Right Stuff certainly portayed him in a good light, a NASA PR bonanza.
On the film's release in 1982, a Newsweek cover asked if the film could help make a President...the Democrats (and appearently Newsweek ), were looking for a challenger to Reagan for the 1984 election. Wiki says that Glenn wasn't fond of the film because it made him look too much like a moralizer and feared it would be a negative in his political career. It's sad that being too moral can be seen as a negative in politics.

I see he turned 90 this summer.
I'll lift a bottle of RC Cola in his honor. I hope the Colonel is enjoying his retirement.

BTW: When he was a Senator, I sent him my copy of We Seven to be autographed, which he did.

Umm... John Glenn had nothing to do with Project SAGEBURNER unless it was part of the later high altitude record attempts (which I can find no direct reference to who flew them). Even at that, the later attempts were only "SAGEBURNER" in attachment, they were done with a different aircraft and whole different team.

Yep....I know a fast food place that even has it in their self-serve fountain. And WM has 2 litre bottles.

On a related note, there's an interesting rumor floating around that in anticipation of Glenn being in attendance NASM is thinking of temporarily moving Friendship 7 out to Dulles for when Discovery arrives.
