NO,NO,NO.
Only the single engine item wandered down to my hangar. And it was broke on arrival.
Everything else was down the ramp 1/2 a mile away.
Out of sight, out of mind.

It was a good to see them visit Coatesville again and their aircraft look great.

Had I known who Jim was back in 2004, I would've been trying to sell him N82D. It's got 4 engines, it's British, and it can carry the family, their luggage, and half the house. :)

Its been awhile so the latest-
Washed half of western TX out of the QEC from the Shackelton-
Looking to trade for 1340 core/parts, Griffon core/parts, P-51/T-6 parts.
This would make a great display. Nearly Complete ShackQEC shell including engine mounts and cowling with exhaust collector and outlet pipes.
All pieces of cowling are there. There is a couple of bumps in 2 pieces. In original paint.

Get a bologna slicer prop to put on the nose of it and then mount the whole thing up on the hangar wall! Now that would be a novelty nobody could top…

Note to self- Don't bet on the Tempest to win any reliability awards.

That's quite fascinating. It sounds like the P-51 wasn't the best at anything, but might have been the more reliable when push came to shove.

I do that a plenty (short field landings, not making neighbors complain) with our Cub at Boerne. It's quite fun.

8 Sqn RAF were the last operational user of the Shackleton back in 1991. They had their own engine bay dedicated to Griffons, and in a last shot at giving the Shackleton the best chance in preservation, all the Griffons they had left were overhauled before they got sold at auction by Sothebys on 3rd July 1991. This engine was part of that bunch (more on that in a moment!). It is likely your engine was one of the spares for WL790, it may be the one they swapped. I can find the serial number, but it will take me a little while to dig through the paperwork at Coventry.

Although it has been modified for use with the transport stillage (the large blue frame) it was a panel from an aircraft. XF707 was a Shackleton MR3/3, built in 1959. It started its career with the A&AEE research unit at Boscombe Down before going on to serve with 201, 206 and later 42 Sqn RAF. It was the last MR3 to be fitted with Rolls Royce Viper engines to supplement the four Griffons, and was struck off charge in 1971, when it was used for firefighting practice. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford currently have its sister, XF708 on display.

I know the story of the engines, as I know where some of the others are. The ones we haven't got are sat baking in the sun next to the fire station at Paphos Airport, Cyprus - which is where the other two 8 Sqn Shackletons went. They're likely going to get scrapped.

I remember a *pile* of them in the T2 at Duxford in '91. gave some pics someplace.
