This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Everybody involved in this business knows that motors are electric and engines are IC, but just as Naval Aviators call carriers "boats" even though they know they're ships--it's a kind of back-handed attempt to show they're pilots and are above such silly maritime differentiations--EVERYBODY in the car-racing business (I'm a pilot but an automotive journalist) calls engines "motors." Calling a racecar's engine "an engine" shows that you're an overly knowledgeable outsider. Strange and silly, but that's the way it is, and pedantically trying to correct them demonstrates the same thing.
I haven't viewed this thread for a few days, but I can't let this one slide. Be very careful who you call an outsider sunshine. I have Engine and Powerplant Licenses (amongst others); no mention of motor licenses....

you tube video posted on Oct 1 showing the sharp pull up from a backstretch view - last pass of the Galloping Ghost at the 3 minute mark.

I think it has to be considered a bit suspect as it wasn't reported as such by Matt who has posted on AAFO since.
I believe the referenced aileron should be the elevator. I believe the A/C was based in Minden NV, not Calif.
CG issues in reference to Wake Turbulence might has some bearing.
This confirms this as just a rumor-

Wow. For one thing I did not know there was a location to watch the race from the backstretch. What a place to be!
Second, that video really shows, at least to me anyway, that the Ghost and the Bear were fast! Holy cow.

Says there:
The point he emphasized repeatedly during our conversation was that, above and beyond the specific inaccuracies in the email, it describes him blabbing about an ongoing investigation. “For me to even comment or even voice my opinion about what went on would not be appropriate,” he says. “I don’t endorse or support any comments that have been posted about what I’ve said or haven’t said.”
Does that also apply to comments he apparently made on AAFO about Jimmy using the trim? or did he not actually make those comments either?

3:15 to 3:18 shows the pitch up. That looks very violent considering the airspeed.

Let Matt speak for Matt. Where ever he wishes to speak.
Just don't go and write up an email and send it around as if you are speaking for him.
The email has a couple of inaccuracies in it when taken at face value.
A/C was based in NV, not Calif and the L/H Elevator Tab is currently the known issue, not the aileron tab.
Speaking as a fact in regards to the NTSB or future Reno operations is very suspect as well.

After the tragic airplane crash at the Reno Air Races, a chorus of protests arose to calling for an end to the air races. But was the pilot to blame or faulty equipment? Bill Whittle breaks down the mainstream media narrative of the crash on this episode of Afterburner.

I followed it pretty close since I was there. I must have missed the chorus of protest from people wanting to cancel the air races... All I saw on TV and in interviews and got from talking to people was that they wanted it to continue.... Everything was positive, I did an interview with CNN that was positive....
Mr. Whittle has his own problems (I saw his video a few days ago).... I'd like to think that most of you don't want to live in his world.... Looking at him on Facebook, he has 7547 "likes" so I'm sure his opinions fall outside the majority.... He definately isn't as popular as even Madonna at 6.35Million....
A true supporter is this guy........ He got the GHOST tatooed on something.....
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bill-Whit ... =1&theaterBTW... The insurance issue is here.... Which is a real problem.... My estimated put them within $100mil coverage, but if its more, then a lot more people are on the hook... Possibly safety inspectors at Reno, RARA Directors, etc....
http://www.riskandinsurance.com/story.j ... topic=MainI'd like to think that the races will continue without any significant changes. Outside of some business considerations, I think they will......

As reported on AAFO-
WASHINGTON - While the investigation into the September 16, 2011 crash of a vintage P-51D Mustang aircraft at the Reno Air Races in Reno, NV remains ongoing, today the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that they were unable to retrieve any on-board video from the badly damaged components and memory cards found in the debris field.
A memory card taken from the on-board telemetry unit of the accident aircraft is still being examined to determine if data can be retrieved.
Additional telemetry data that was transmitted from the accident aircraft to the race crew on the ground is also still being examined. Any information recovered from the card, and any telemetry data will be included in the public docket.
NTSB investigators continue to review the dozens of videos and hundreds of photographs provided to them by spectators at the air race.
Additional updates of factual information will be provided as it is developed.

Don't want this thread to die on the Reno races!!
It looks like the races may still be on for this year as dates have been set and tickets go on sale March 1st!
http://airrace.org/get_tickets/index.phphttp://airrace.org/for_media/index.phpPermits and the FAA waiver still have to be obtained but they are definitely going to try to have it!!
Do we have any further info as to how the investigation is going?

I would suggest a new thread on Reno as it is GOOD news that they will be continuing, and this particular thread has a very sad bent to it.

It's funny how all vehicles except aircraft run on 'motors', isn't it? Lawnmowers, boats, cars, etc. As much as I hate it, I try to stick with what's appropriate where I am. I had an uncle-in-law who had an auto repair shop & was he a stickler! I don't know how many times I heard him say, when someone would talk about this motor or that motor in a vehicle, he'd ask, 'What motor, wiper motor, starter motor, what motor are you talking about?' This is kinda like 'new' engines. I've had several airplane customers with 'new' engines that were plain old overhauled engines & I didn't think I was ever going to get them to understand that a new engine is a brand new engine from the factory & an overhauled engine is just that.

I should have mentioned it in this thread, but I have posted my Reno pics and you can find them here...
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=43090&start=165The pics also include a picture of the Galloping Ghost on the "last lap". It was looking really good at the time.
