Driving down Gibson NE avenue, and shortly before San Mateo Ave., on the right hand side and inside the Kirtland AFB grounds, I glimpsed what looked like a blue PBY, and also either a C-47 or a DC-3.

Do you guys have seen these aircraft? Is it possible to visit and photograph them?

Yes, there is a PBY there...along with an Huskie helicopter and other rescue craft. Kirtland is the home for USAF helicopter/Rescue training.

Check the base's website...it might have a photo. To get a photo in person, contact public affairs...they might be able to escort you on base. Tell them you're a history buff and promise not to take too much time.

(As a former AF Public Affairs officer I can attest that most offices aren't too crazy about these requests...taking "tail spotters " out for hours has jaded them. But you might find a nice guy...like I was!)

Kirtland also has the Atomic museum, which has a B-29 and some other stuff.

Kirtland AFB brings back some memories. I spent 42 months there '55-'59. Headquartes, 34th Air Division (Defense)
86th FINCEPTRON was flying the F-86.
Funny story.... One day, a B-58 was doing supersonic and subsonic practice weapons drop at White Sands range. Seems he had a malfunction and had to land at Kirtland. Because it was such a secret plane, they brought it down to the "Alert" area and surrounded it with a canvas fence. Not very bright. My duty station was on a hill that overlooked the area and we could see right down into where the plane was parked. Since our barracks was only 100 yds. away, there was a mad rush to our rooms to get cameras. I had about a dozen shots that have, alas, disappeared in the last 45 years.

That was back when you could go 6 blocks north or south from Central Ave. in ABQ and you'd be out in the desert. Used to ride horses all through the Sandias and Manzanos. I've heard that doing that now I'd probably be in someone's backyard.
