Just a quick FYI to all WIX'ers that the Newark OH F-4C at Newark Heath Airport (KVTA) will be dedicated 3pm this Friday on Veterans Day. Mayor John's will be in attendance for schedule media interviews. Vets/aviation enthusiasts/all welcome to attend.

Thanks again for the support from the WIX family for something that started as a whim during a snowy day in Ohio last December...

BTW I mentioned to my wife that while flying last Saturday to Zanesville I was reaquantied with the F-105 Thud there that is in need of some attention. When I mentioned this to my wife she thinks I have found a second career....

Yeah! I can imagine that you feel a good deal of pride. Well done!

We are still weeks away from finishing the F-84.

Kevin, if you decide to do the 105, use real paint. They found out here at Ellington, that the latex we were told to use on the 147th F-4 caused a ton of corrosion. NMUSAF want's to cocoon these aircraft to keep the moisture out, unfortunately it is trapping moisture causing a lot of corrosion in a short time.

Oh yeah, the other thing on the F-105, bring ladders,....lots of ladders !

Sherwin Williams actually makes a paint blend specifically made for use on outdoor metals. That is what we used on the C-47 at Grissom. It's more expensive than just laytex paint, but it's worth it. What is Ohio's rules on spraying outdoors? Rick what are your thought on the durrability of regular aircraft paint compared to some other options out there.

Chris, the latex we used was an industrial latex specified by NMUSAF. It lasted about 4 years and started looking really ratty on the side that gets the afternoon sun. The guard jost did redid it again.

The real shocker was the corrosion that was found under the latex. The airframe was pretty clean when we did it. I've heard this complaint before. I personally believe that real paint with a good prep and an epoxy primer is better, long term.

Thanks Rick H! I bet that can explain the alot of the issues we are finding with the Grissom aircraft that have been outside and painted over and over again for 40-60 years.

I think this latex directive is a reasonably new requirement that was put in place to appease the environmentalists.

Yeah I think maybe the last 10 years or so? I know the aircraft were painted with real aircraft paint when they were on base in the 80's, but it seems that the ones that have been repainted after the mid 90's used latex
