Hi,

Can anyone point me to a USAAC or Air Ministry manual for any Merlin model, that has coolant/oil/fuel flow-diagrams like the one below? This image comes of course from a USAAC manual for the Allison in the P-40.

I'm finishing a PPT presentation re the Merlin for the VWoC "Warbird U" series, and looking for this kind of very clear, simple teaching aid.

Thanks,

Dave

For example, here's what I find in the Merlin manuals.

Contrast it with the hand-drawn graphic of the Allison. Obviously the Allison is much easier to learn from. Is there nothing like this for the Merlin?

Dave,
There is something like this diagram available for the Merlin. I have a copy that I can forward on to you. Just let me know where you want it sent.

The ALLISON artwork was possibly done by underemployed graphic artists @ GM's Design Studio, ain't a lot you can do to 'sexy up' a drawing of a 6X6 truck and Harley Earl was a driven person, but doing stuff like the coolant routing in the engine would be something I'll bet the artists took to like Bourbon and ice.
If you look through an ALLISON manual, a great number of 'logic' illustrations are in the same vein, my ALLISON Overhaul Manual copy has pages of wonderful artists impressions of the fluids and cooling paths for anything that used an ALLISON and the most complex are the ones for the P-38 and P-39, and Rolls probably took a complete indstrial approach.

Thanks to Mark for sending me scans of Merlin systems! Apparently these are from the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust publications. Much better schematics, using perspective and colour.

Also, I did find the RCAF Merlin 66 manual on-line, at http://aviationshoppe.com/manuals/v-165 ... erlin.html You can't save each page it seems, but apparently you can print.

Great stuff, and useful for the kinds of things we do.

Taken last Sept at the B of B flypast, Gatineau and Rockcliffe (Ottawa), Ontario.
