Re: Anyone else watching Vietnam in HD?

I live in Va Beach near Oceana so a lot of the Naval Aviators kids went to school with me. I can remember more than once when a kid was pulled out of class because dad had been shot down and was POW, MIA or KIA. I had the misfortune of being at my very first girlfriends house at the ripe age of 12 when her family got the notification that her brother was KIA. Honestly she was never right again. And to this day she still isn't. Even as a kid living here we were very well aware of what was going on and the sacrifices made by both those that served and their families.

Watching last night when they were discussing how they were treated coming home just tore me up. Sickening. I almost got physically ill.

God bless every one of you guys that served and god bless the families that supported you. Thank you all for your service.

My only complaint is that there's only 6 episodes instead of 16 or 60.

God bless 'em, I can't get enough of listening to the stories told by the vets.

Much of that history occurred when I was a kid, by the time turned 18 the war was "over". I do remember watching the evening news with my father and seeing the nightly reports on Vietnam.

I too remember watching the films from the combat zone on the nightly news with the Late Great Walter Kronkite or on the Chet Huntley / David Brinkley Report.
It was call the Living Room War, because that is how us R.E.M.F's saw the war, from the comfort of our livingroom.
By the time I reached draft age we had disengaged from "hostilities".
I always felt bad for the Soldiers coming home...

We had a friend who was sent over, he was a Marine 1st Lt. We got word that he was going to be featured on the news, we all watched. He was dead a few days later, Norman was a good guy. Needless to say, we were all shocked to hear the news about someone we knew and had just seen on TV.

I know what you mean and its something that I have been dealing with for a while. Ive been chatting with the same group of vets since 1998 and we are all older since we first met. Its something that I am not to try and take for granted that they will always be there to answer my questions when I think of them. Time is not standing still for me, hense why I am pushing forward with a project that I started in 2000. I would like to get it done so the guys can have time to enjoy it.

I have been at home sick for the last week, so with nothing else to do but sweat, chill, hack, and sneeze, I had the chance to watch all the episodes....an added treat, was the re-visiting Woodstock on one of the channels, which fit in with the Vietnam series, for a perspective of the other side of America.

I was in the One-Oh-Worst, Pukin' Buzzards during the Nam years, but stayed state-side. Everybody says I should be thankful that I didn't go, but I have been carring this guilt thing around for years, because I did not go, when I volunteered for it. Lost a lot of classmates to the Nam when they took thier senior trip to S.E. Asia. A lot of my friends that returned, came back totally, and I mean TOTALLY a different person....

It brought back memories, watching the series in color, I could see the same expression or look in the eyes of the troops, as the guys that came back home...I know that some had seen horrors beyond my comprehension.

I made the mistake of asking too many question when I was younger, and came to appreciate their common reply getting tagged as an "know nuthin' REMF"...

Best thing I know to do now a days, is tell them "Welcome home , Bro" and offer my hand. That seems to put a smile on their face and a spark in their eyes , when you let them know you appreciate what they have done, and who they are.

p.s. Not to long ago, here in Kansas City..(Mo)...My favorite target...Jane Fonda..was here at the Plaza for a book signing....A Vietnam vet stood in line for a few hours, and when he got his turn for her autograph...spat on her, and walked away.....I thought to myself, when I heard this.. Mission accomplished!

I missed the draft by one. They drew the first 1/3, my birthdate was in the 2nd 3rd. Had a friend who died over there and another one who is messed up from agent orange. Series brings back a lot of fellings, mostly bad. Work with some one much younger and he can't believe how the returning troops were treated. Remember the Huntley-Brinkley news and the head counts nightly. Was a very bad time in our history. Glad the series was produced. If we forget the past we may do it all over again.

I watched the final segment last night. Well done I thought. Its amazing how much the Huey played a part in the war. They were literally everywhere. As the show was wrapping up, I could not help but think how much equipment of all kinds we left over there. There was a shot of several C-47's sitting on a ramp somewhere. The narration indicated they could not be flown due to a lack of fuel. I wonder if they are still around? The think of all the tanks, 6x6's, artillery pieces etc, etc that were left behind. Not to mention all the Huey's that are sitting on the bottom of the sea after being pushed off the carriers due to lack of space to park them. Your tax $ at work, I guess.

Hey, I'm not hooked up to cable or anything (dinosaur, I know, I know...), so can you guys tell me what the name of this series is so I can put it on my want list at Netflix for when it's released?

Thanks!
