Google Earth and Aircraft

Hey folks,

I have wasted a HUGE amount of time doing this so you have been warned.

First, you need Google Earth installed.
http://earth.google.com/

(A high speed connection to the internet aand a fast computer are a big help)

Once installed, look up your favorite locations for items, (My preference is Military Aircraft, DUH..)

In my two examples, what is that hidden half in the trees here beside that C-130, is that an F4 Phantom?

If you want to see for yourself, put these cooridnates in the find location bar and click find. The program spins the Earth around and zooms in right onto the aircraft.

This is at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio.


Down the road at the Air Force Museum I found this...

Why would all those silouttes be painted on the old runway?

Have fun and don't curse me when you see how much time you waste. Post your finds please, just the LAT and LONG if you cannot post pictures.

Remember this works best in highly populated areas as these have been photographed with higher res cameras. So looking for lost warbirds is out.

Here is one I got. It is of the Southern California Wing of the CAF. This is in Camarillo, CA.



The big plane in the middle is the C-46 "China Doll". The planes off to the left are a B-25, Martin 404, Broussard, a few T-6s, and various other aircraft. In this shot the C-131 is away to an airshow or something, it would normally be off to the right.

I've found that google uses the same photos as http://terraserver.microsoft.com/, so you can see when thephoto was done.

It overlays google maps with google earth and sectional charts. You can type in an airport identifier and go straight there. Also displays ASOS information. Pretty cool website.

Busted. Caught in the act on satilite. Appearently some guy on Lake Michigan just west of Chicago buzzing a boat. Awesome. Unless it's some sort of drug deal then it's not so awesome.

Doggone it, I was gonna post this -
Near Mundelein, IL; Polidori Field, aka the late Earl Reinert's Victory Air Museum - pull back a little and you still can see where the 3000-foot grass runway was, including the area on the left side halfway down that used to flood out (I took a ride with Paul in his Taylorcraft once - ONLY once - and we managed to hit the flooded area on landing - nice rooster tail !)
