I know someone who is in the process of restoring an RCAF Chipmunk, and is looking for the proper yellow paint for finishing it.

According to Patrick Martin's book on the subject, "All trainers were apparently painted with "Yellow 5-2", with "Yellow 1-GP-31" for fabric control surfaces."

Can anyone suggest an off-the-shelf paint that would be suitable for this purpose?

If you have a painted part that's fairly small and particularly if it's been shaded from direct sunlight, take it to the local auto paint jobber and have it analyzed by computer, they will mix you an exact color, shade, and tint match and the mix formula for the next batch and in pretty much any type paint you want to use. altho several states and locales are or have stopped selling of lacquer based paints because of VOC's, so unless you are redoing the paint on a 1931 PACKARD you should be OK. :drink3:

If its for fabric check with the Poly Fiber or Superflite folks.

You're best bet is getting it custom made. Our Harvards use the same Yellow and we have had no luck finding an off-the-shelf match.

We just had one of the control surfaces repainted on our Chipmunk and the color looks great. Perfect match to the rest of the aircraft. Contact the airport maintainer at Burlington Airpark just outside Toronto. I think his name is Vince. He use to paint aircraft and happened to have an exact match sitting around in his shop. He should be able to give you the information you need.
