Carrier-based rocket launch?

While browsing around on Facebook, I found this page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Corsair- ... 95?sk=wall) which has hundreds of pictures of Corsairs, nicely divided into albums that might be of interest to many here on WIX. (I also noticed at least three pictures that I have either taken myself or personally posted online...some of you may do the same...) Anyway, I found this one, and wondered what was going on here:

The Navy did launch at least one captured V-2 from the U.S.S. Midway CVA-41 in 1947 looking for a way to lengthen the range and test the potential for dedicated missle launchers, Operation SANDY was promoted by Adm. Dan Gallery who captured the U-505 now in Chicago museum of Industry (and author of a series of very funny books)

interesting, but a bottle rocket would have been more successful. the entire thing looks like a "rube goldberg" rig!!

Perhaps, but it was literally @ the crack of dawn in missile technology, using a captured very dangerous piece of enemy technology that the developers let alone our scientists really didn't fully understand. It was a bold attempt to see if it might be practical to launch close in to an enemy coast since the existent V-2 actually had pretty short legs. I remember being WOWED by footage from cameras mounted on the outside of V-2's launched from White Sands and soaring to 35000 feet or so, pretty heady stuff for a kid in the mid 50's. Looking back now we can see just how far we were from going to the Moon or other planets, but on the same scale as seeing old movies footage of the 1909 Reims air meet and envisioning supersonic airliners or flying on a regular basis from New York to Tokyo non stop would have been in 1909-

thanks for the info...that YouTube video of the launch shows just how "bold" that test was. Wow! It seems unusual to have a few planes on the flight deck, but maybe the picture was taken while they were testing the rig that held the V-2 upright.
