Did you catch Director James Brooks' commentary before and after the movie? Kubrick actually was set to make a very serious anti nuclear war movie and had an author of a book he's read do a serious script, but the more he thought about it, the more he morphed it into a humorous anti nuclear war film, and as Brooks said, Kubrick was in no way a comedy guy and originally Sellers was supposed to play Maj. Kong too but sprained an ankle and couldn't move around in the B-52 set so Slim Pickins got the work which boosted him from bit player/third banana in Westerns to a sort of comedic actor too, like Brooks said 'the best comedy ever'.
Kubricks skills at chess and George C. Scotts inability to beat him is what kept Scott focused on the movie.

Want a real head trip? Watch "Failsafe" and "Dr. Strangelove" back to back. (Twilight Zone music...) There's a lot of humor in Strangelove I didn't get until I saw both movies.
