There was a girl at Oshkosh 10 or 12 years ago that had a F4F Wildcat tattoo. Her boyfriend that week was either a T-6 pilot or mechanic . The Wildcat was three tone blue on her inside ankle with the words "Wild CaT"
below it. The group she was with were at the Warbirds hospitality room. She was "hot" and in her twenties and so you can imagine the comments!

Marine Air... pictures; man; pictures !!!!

It has been my experience that when those of us afflicted with this disease are confronted with a scene such as Marine Air describes do not take a picture of said individual. We usually prefer to save the film for the next warbird to come along ! :(

I once suggested to my wife that if we had twins, the names could have been "Pratt" and "Whitney", or "Rolls" and "Royce". Her suggestion was "McDonnell" and "Douglas". There never has been an occasion to use these suggestions, although my son overheard this discussion and subsequently named his two guinea pigs "Rolls" and "Royce".

I have twin cats named Isaac and Newton...kind of back to where it all began. I considered Pratt and Whitney (they're Tom Cats, so maybe not), also Donald and Douglass, and Glenn and Curtis.

Three Canadian girls that I'm good friends with have identical Spitfire tattoos on their ankles. I think Dan Linn may have met them at Reno this year.

No ink, but there were a couple of ladies wearing Nomex flight suits that had been converted to mini dresses at a show party around 15 years ago.

Well... I was introduced to them at Reno but our very short conversation never made it to tattoos...

I have a house and garage full of aviation memorbilia... O... I have cat named Gilmore after Roscoe Turner's lion.

Cant say that I am into the tatoo thing. But yes I like Warbirds. Been around them ever since I could walk. Once that was established, I was working the flight line at airshows or sitting on 3 cushions so my head would stick out of the cockpit. I've got my fair share of hard times, 2 blown engines, one emer landing and the winter months. On occasion I get to smell some burnin 100LL out of the N3N or something that my uncle is playing with. But unfortunatly my time has been shortened with other interests like staying married and working for a living. It sucks that for 4 days of the week I am working recycled aluminum from Brazil that is powered by 2 Allisons that are not so romantic like a couple of 1710's. I try to come home and relax by listining to my fav CD round sounds.
Why did people get the need to go places in a god dam hurry!!! People need to slow down and enjoy the country, Lets enjoy it in a DC7,.....shal we???

OK, might as well come clean amongst friends... yes, I have quite a bit of carefully thought out and planned tattoo work devoted to aviation. It is covered by my clothes for professional purposes, but I am very proud of the artwork and the progress so far, so here goes:

Image
This thigh piece was influenced by the Bendix Trophy... if you know the actual design of the trophy, you'll notice this is like "if the trophy came alive". The head shot is Jackie Cochran... Done by Chris Dingwell, Sanctuary Tattoo - Portland, ME

Image
This left lower back piece was designed as the start of the whole back project. The image was taken and adapted from a 1927 Airshow Program cover artwork. She represents "The Spirit of Propulsion" one of the two positive forces that makes flight possible. Again, done by Chris Dingwell - Sanctuary Tattoo, Portland, ME.

Image
This whole back project (which is very much NOT done yet) is the continuation of the lower back piece shown above. The central figure in the image is Icarus falling from the sky (uncolored at this point). Obviously the orange mass at the top left is the sun... and the photo doesn't do it justice at all. Very subtle colors and very vibrant. Next to it, on the center top and right side is the "Spirit of Lift", the other positive force that makes flight possible to balance the Spirit of Propulsion. She is adapted from the often used Vargas art that can be seen on many noses of planes (B-25 "Special Delivery" for one). She is in front of the 1894 Otto Lillienthal glider, one of the first practical and often flown glider designs. Of course the middle and lower parts aren't done yet, and you can barely see Daedalus at the lower right. Again, done by Chris Dingwell - Sanctuary Tattoo, Portland, ME. Excuse the back hair... I am born of bigfoot blood.

Before anyone jumps to judgement, I will say that I have been working on this project for about 4 years now... over 60 hours of work. Before that, I developed the design and researched the artist over 7 years time. I have long enjoyed the artform much as anyone would in painting or sculpture. Just because it is on skin doesn't make it any less difficult or requiring skill or inspiration on behalf of the artist, so it is very similar to classical artforms. Tattooing, though often stereotyped as being deviant, has been used by many cultures and generations long before our time as a right of passage and a mark of distinguishment. The artform is very unique and has range far from the biker, military, or deviant stereotypes that the 20th Century has portrayed it as. My work is very well hidden when in public and I am not going to go beyond its current hidden form. In fact, this is really the first time I have shown it on a larger scale... I just wanted to explain the reasoning behind it all.

Ryan K
