I believe this photo is taken of a plane undergoing test at Edwards AFB, but am unable to identify the type. Surely someone here can shed some light as to what this really is?

Looks like the McDonnell XP-67 Moonbat.

That is the McDonnell XP-67 aircraft. It first flew in 1944 and was McDonnell's only piston powered fighter.

Since it was during the war years, it would have flown at Muroc, as the Edwards name came along later, FYI.

Never got to Muroc. Power was 2 CONTINENTAL inverted V-12 XIV-1430 engines that couldn't make promised power ratings and had serious teething troubles. The airplane was unstable with a tendency to dutch roll and pilots would not spin it fearing it wouldn't recover, and only reached 405 MPH.
One and only prototype destroyed @ Lambert Field in St. Louis following a post landing fire.
