Ryan, you don't have anything to explain to anyone. Although I don't have any tattoos myself, I think your work looks great. If anyone passes judgment on you (under the guises of professionalism, et al), tell 'em where they can stick it.

Personal freedom and expression *does* still mean something in the America that I'm fighting for...

That’s amazing, Ryan. How many more hours do think before you’re done, or does a project like that never really get “finished”?

Ryan:

GORGEOUS work!! Thanks for sharing it!

I'm gonna jump in and address a couple points, as another one of the "inked":

Rick: It's damned near impossible to get AIDS from a tat needle. The virus that causes AIDS only lives 30 seconds to 2 minutes in free air. It is however much easier to get hepatitis from unsterilized needle bars or equipment. That's why ANY reputable artist will only use needles once, and sterilze the bars and machines etc in a medical autoclave between EVERY customer. If you deal with a *professional* and not yer buddy at the kitchen table, there is nothing to worry about disease wise.

Tom: An artist can either work freehand, or he will take the art and run it thru a tracer, which is like a mimeograph machine. It makes an outline pattern on a transfer that he then applies to the subject's skin as a guide.

I've noticed that many of the best artists pride themselves on working freehand.

I was waiting for someone to jump all over that. The post AIDS has nothing to do with tattoos.

It has everything to do with Robs comment about warbirds and wimmen.

AIDS = AVIATION INDUCED DIVORCE SYNDROME

I've enjoyed reading this thread. It's obviously about tattoos, since anyone going to this website regularly for recreational purposes is obviously a warbird enthusiast.

I have to agree and disagree with Randy for a moment. Absolutely people should be free to self express, including tattoos. People should also be free to have an opinion of liking or disliking them. (I still dislike them.) Professionalism, however, does include a component of appearance, so I understand why Ryan does not plan to continue the art beyond what can be covered with clothing. Grease under the nails or ink under the skin, both could be judged by the eye of the beholder of being unprofessional. Now you can still act professional in either case, it just may not "look" professional. After all, there is a viable suit market right (and military uniforms!)? I love the comfort of a t-shirt & jeans, but if I show up to do business in them, I will not look or be professional to those I encounter.

I still prefer natural tattoos. Scars.....and I have alot of them!

Thanks everyone for your kind words... I really appreciate it!

I'll be putting something on my personal site about my work in the future and would like to include a gallery of any aviation related tattoo work I can find. If anyone has anything to contribute, please email me at ryan@ryankeough.com. Thanks!

....went into Indian Motorcycles. I was just going to get the laughing Indian tatooed to my left arm (if anybody knows the design from the 1920's), but an original Indian 741 powerplant brand new in the crate came up for sale. So it was ink or aluminum and iron. I chose aluminum and iron. Nice work, Ryan. Actually, not just nice- incredible. I'm jealous...

Warbird content- Indian acquired Lawrance Aeronautical Corporation during WWII.
