Warbird Information Exchange

Does anyone know the current status of the late Harry Doan's AD-5 Skyraider BuNo 132534? I searched past WIX messages about Harry and many members have helped account for his B-25s, the Skyraider he was killed in (now with Rick Sharpe) and some of his other aircraft but not this Skyraider. The Warbird Registry says stored. Is it sitting in storage at New Smyrna Beach?

I may be wrong, but I think Hank Avery owns it and bases it somewhere in North Carolina.

Maybe Mr. Avery bought the Doan derelict Skyraider airframe for spare parts?

The Skyraider you were interested in is at Evergreen in OR.... I saw it and shot some pics of it when it was in Utica NY in 1978....

Looks good now, didn't look good then.

Wow! Getting flashbacks. When I was a wee lad growing up in South Daytona, Fl back in the 60's and 70's we used to drive by the Doan place on Big Tree Rd. It was about 3 miles from our house. As I recall, there were one or two old helo's there that on occasion would fly around the neighborhood. As a kid, it was a treat to watch them take off. I just checked, the Doan heliport is still listed. I'll have to check it out when I go back home.


Funny New Smyrna was mentioned in that old thread. A few days ago I got a call from buddy who lives three miles or so north of the New Smyrna airport. He was watching a couple of old birds flying around and thought of me. I was there in December and January and took the below pics of the Witchcraft and Nine-O-Nine and a few other gems at American Aero Services going thru maintenance. I suspect it was those two. However the one P-51 was due for run-ups after I left so that's a possibility.

Wow, I was wondering what became of the Skyraider I saw at a small GA airport between Rone and Utica in 1981-82 (when I was assigned to Griffiss AFB).

IIRC, the engine was hanging off of it and there was a delelict PT-19 next to it along with a pile of Bell 47 and Grumman Goose parts/fuselages.
Is the airport still there?

Real quick the airport was RIVERSIDE in Marcy NY, I doubt it was even 10 miles from Griffis... Its LONG gone, not even on the old sat photos on mapquest. It got sold off to the state for a possible interchange on the NY State Thruway.

There was a PT-19 at the mechanic's school there (we moved out in 1975 to Pittsburgh). The school was owned by Gordon Newell, who had some kind of business and I think was a county commissioner too. He had a couple of nice Widgeons and some other asst airplanes in his time (the T-6 that Lone Star has now was one of them, which was part of the school at one time).... At one time in the early 1970s he had the first flying T-28 that I had ever seen and at the time there were very few (from what I understand). He also had some project T-28s too.

The other Widgeon or two and the Bell 47s belonged to Bob Morris who bought god knows how many of them from the Army as surplus. My dad and I went out to look at a few of them and he worked on several. Dad and Bob are probably the only self taught helicopter pilots in the world after Igor himself. They hopped in a 47 one evening and learned to fly it. Pretty cool (and looking back, not real bright either)...

The Skyraider was a later addition to Gordon's collection in the late 1970's I think I saw it in 1978 and took some pictures of it. It was assembled and the engine was on the ground in front of it. I kind of wondered what happened to it and it turned out to be at Evergreen. I need to look at pictures from there, I'm sure I've got some of it.

Riverside was one of those cool airports that are hard to find now a days... I kind of miss it. I was in NY last summer and you couldn't even really find the runway (although I knew where it was at).... Sorry to see it go.. If someone can host the pictures, I'll send you the Skyraider shots I have to post.

Tom Sharkey lived up the street from us in Oriskany, I forget his dad's name, but his dad was a flight instructor and I never knew he was a wingwalker......
