By today's standards, the movie sucks.

What, you mean in comparison with Pearl Harbor? Flyboys? Red Tails?

In it's day (1985) I think TG was pretty good. I grew up next to Miramar, lived under the flight path and had F-14 pilots as several of my neighbors (including my next door neighbor who was a TG instructor). So I was pretty familiar with the real TG school. Yeah, there was some liberties taken. I loved them being out over the desert when they eject and land in the ocean, which is 100 miles away. By today's standards, the movie sucks.

With that said, I think if they make a sequel, it's gonna be a dog. I can't stand TC anymore and really don't care to see his mug.

Groundbreaking movie for its time (1986). Cheesy? Yes, but it was the 80s. The flying scenes were awesome and that is what probably matters to the majority of us.

Exactly - from an ex-Tomcat maintainer, it was the F-14 that starred in the movie, not Tom Cruise.

Give me a break. The F-14 turned in a MUCH better performance in "The Final Countdown" than in Topgun.

If anything, it's THAT movie that should be rebooted. Except this time, at the end, Yelland decides to run from the storm and let his airwing engage.
