Airfix Tomahawk Finished

Fri Mar 09, 2012 2:47 am

Got the new Airfix Tomahawk finished. A great kit, and a wonderfully trouble-free build. The only extras I added were tape seatbelts, a chunk of clear stock inside the windscreen to represent the armor glass, an MV lens landing light (because I lost the kit part) and some wedges of plastic card between the cowl flaps. Unfortunately, I didn't discover until after painting decaling that that there's not supposed to be a panel line on the chin, but it's too late to fix it now.

The kit decals went on beautifully..the only aftermarkets I used were some old Superscale wing insignias. The panel lines are a bit heavy, but don't look too bad after painting and clearcoating. I added some exhaust, oil, and gun stains, and some "chipping" using a silver Prismacolor pencil. I may add a bit more weathering, and I'd like to get a PE ring sight, but for now I'm calling it done.

Cheers!

Steve

It looks great, how's it compare to the ACADEMY B/C kit?

Looks great!

I've already picked up a couple of these and look forward to building one.

For the price i'd pick this over the Academy any day.

Kitsworld Decals has lots of new aftermarket schemes for these as well.

Thanks for the compliments, guys! The model took 2nd place in the 1/72 Single-Engine Prop (Allied) category at last week's IPMS Indianapolis show.

There really is no comparison between the Airfix and Academy kits. The Academy is a crude and inaccurate toy..basically a knock-off of the old Fr0g (if I type the actual word the auto-censor changes it to "French") with engraved panel lines and a crappier canopy, while the Airfix kit is a detailed and accurate model, for about the same price (maybe even cheaper..I'm not sure what the Academy kit goes for now.)
