There were some similar photos being passed around within the past 2 years, however I believe that over 80% of these are new, ie. weren't in the previous group. Thanks for sharing - I hope some of our serious Mustang guys are archiving these.

There was a whooooole lotta WOW in that post... tons of photos I've not seen before, with awesome closeups of the long-range tanks and mounts, nice clear views of the primered/filled/painted wing, aluminum inner gear doors, etc.

I would guess the air to air pics of the gaggle flying in formation with the B-29 was bringing fresh A/C to the fwd base.
No unit markings or paint and very clean.

Yes, the author states that in the text just before the photos. It took awhile to read it all, but it is definitely worth the time invested!

Two very interesting tidbits, first the use of modified wing tanks to haul life rafts (like to see a lot more detail on that) and the use of 'GEEZ, never thought about that' use of plywood pieces as sway braces for drop tanks, were those standard or a a local adaptation?

It's too bad that in the one close up nose shot of the burning B-29 the aircrafts name had been given a liberal coating of typing correction fluid or razor blading to wipe out the name as the artwork was very interesting.

I don't see any nose art on any of the burning B-29s. Do you mean the crashed one with the Pirate? That's just the standard 6th Bomb Group markings after the April '45 orders issued that all B-29s have the "nude women" and ultimately all the unique nose art removed.

If you look just aft of the pirate you'll see part of a name that is obscured. I believe this is what he was referencing.

Pretty much! I didn't think a crew would settle for a couple of sloshes of white paint as 'NOSE ART' unless they were going to call it "White Bread"

What looks like an attempt to hide the name is really part of the new art work. Just looks like they never got it finished.

Great link. I would say the picture in question is the remains of Ernie Pyle's Milk Wagon/Uncle Sam's Milk Wagon (42-93906) as the one word you can make out appears to be Milk.
