You are correct Rick. In Spanish, "Pancho" is the diminutive form of proper name, Francisco.

Following is an excerpt from her biography, that explains why she "adopted" the nickname:

In 1928, Florence's desire for adventure led her to disguise herself as a man and join a banana boat crew. In San Blas, Mexico, she jumped ship with a fellow crewmember and wandered the Mexican countryside. At one point during the trip, Florence was riding a donkey and her companion started calling her "Pancho" because he said she reminded him of Don Quixote's sidekick. When Florence told him that Quixote's attendant's name was actually Sancho Panza, he told her he did not care and the name "Pancho" stuck.

she took a long debaucherous excursion down to mexico in the 20's, with plenty of partying, boinking, rowdiness etc. i have the specific details on file, but i'm sure you can only imagine with her reputation & legend!!!

I was ready CNN and the update on the recovery of the aircrew man. It said he could be one of 10 missing airman.

So how many Missing a/c are still in the Sierra Range? Or the Rockies, US and Canada? I wouldn't think the MIA list in the US would be that great. Can anyone shed some light on this?

it's not official, but he may be a native ohioan according to research authorities. if it is the mia they suspect, then he has 3 anxious surviving sisters who are waiting for the forensic findings & piece of mind after all these years. their brother went missing in 1942.

No scoop Tom. I ran across it by accident and got the impression they
were going to ID the recovered airman..but no dice. As I gather they
introduced each of the cadets and Instructor Bill Gamber as possibilities
...they showed the families, and what the ID would mean to them if the
airman is their family member. But at the end they say the military hopes
to have definite ID by the end of December. They've done the DNA tests
and forensics stuff, so now it comes down to waiting for the process to
take it's course. Some of the family members were troubled at the wait
and felt the DNA part could be released earlier.
