any warbirds in Upstate South Carolina?

HI folks,
been away from Warbirds too long and was wondering if anybody is flying or restoring Warbirds or classics in the upstate south carolina area (my new home).

Whereabouts in upstate SC are you? I just moved to western NC from Michigan and I've found the pickings pretty slim so far down here.

If you're up for a little road trip, the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte, NC is hosting the Red Tails Traveling Exhibit and CAF P-51C April 10-15. That might be worth checking out depending on how far of a drive that is for you. I'm going to use that as my opportunity to check out the museum. I've heard good things about it and it looks like they have a pretty nice collection.

Other than that, there aren't too many museums and very few warbird events unless you're willing to travel. The Shaw Air Force Base Expo is in May and that looks decent. There is also a pretty big warbird show in Monroe, NC just south of Charlotte in early November.

Hope this is helpful and maybe someone can chime in with some better info, because I could use a warbird fix too.

Agreed Matt...pretty slim pickings in this general area. I moved here from Northern Indiana about 5 years ago now. Went to a nice little fly-in down in Danville, Va a few years ago...got to meet Tom Reilly and saw a few warbirds...tons of cars on show there. Don't know why they have not had a show there since. Lynchburg had the Blue Angels last summer for the first time in about 30 years. Due to a technical difficulty, it appears they will not be back for a very long time :cry:

This coming May, I am planning a trip up to re-visit Udvar-Hazy and then down to Va Beach for the big show May 18-20. I figure that weekend should just about give me warbird overdose! If that is possible :roll:

I sure miss Thunder, Oshkosh, NMUSAF, Grissom Air Museum etc from the good old days. The natural beauty of this area makes up for it all nicely...but I need to smell aviation fuel soon!

I'm in Anderson SC, just down the road from Greenville SC. I went to the Dixie Wing of the CAF last year when they had their WWII event. A little disappointing from the Warbird front since their own Mustang and Dauntless was away and not even at their own show! They are about 3.5 hrs from here so I don't think I'll be a regular anyway. At one point I was volunteering at a flying Air museum when I lived up north, and I'm really missing the smell of Avgas. So it anyone knows or hears of any warplanes in the area that might need a helper, Please let me know.

There was a Corsair in a hangar at Cheraw. It's in pieces, but looks to be in pretty good shape. I believe it's owned by the local Pepsi distributor.

There's also a C-47 at Cheraw.

T-37 and Huey static in Gaffney.

In Asheboro, NC just up the road from Cheraw, there used to be the "Peddycord Foundation for Aircraft Preservation" museum. It changed names, now called the North Carolina Aviation Museum.

I have not traveled much in SC, and I am sure there are those out of the way places with an interesting display.

Closer to Asheville, IIRC Hendersonville and Rutherfordton, had each, a small museum with an assortment of aircraft, but my last visit goes back to 2003.

Thanks guys, I've been to see most of the static aircraft, but was more interested in any flying A/C that might be in the area.

There is a small collection in Bennettsville, SC. A combat vet RAF Dakota, T-6, Swift, and a Corsair restoration project. http://www.rareairinc.com/index.html

The Western North Carolina Air Museum in Hendersonville, NC has an Air Fair the first weekend in June every year. http://www.wncairmuseum.com/
