Robert Strauss. He also played "Animal" in "Stalag 17". Great character actor.

There was a lot of that in Korea. I was not unheard for a retread WW2 vet to simply ignore orders or procedures he didn't like, because he knew what worked and as if to dare the regulars to send him home. It probably led directly to the lack of full involvement of the reserves and National Guard in Vietnam which in turn caused its own problems.

Robert Strauss gave some under appreciated performances.

the piece where Mickey Rooney is wearing the top hat and going between the two ships is still one of my favorites.

Great flight scenes and accurate aircraft in flight scenes.. rare these days!

Helps when the movie is filmed (1954) when the aircraft in question are still around. Much like Twelve O'clock High being filmed in 1949, lots of "props" still around.

My Uncle Rear Admiral Jack Sweeney was on board the USS Tarawa CV-40 when it arrived in Korean Waters just after the cease fire. he thinks that it is the most accurate movie about carriers ever made. Very few inaccuracies according to him.
