And who could forget the trench run in STAR WARS. classic...

Which actually is more on topic than you might realize. George Lucas used WWII guncamera footage for the shoots of Tie Fighters and X-Wings, in some cases almost shot for shot. He also used other footage as the basis for the Tie Fighters attacking the Millenium Falcon (this footage being shot from B-17's and B-24s of attacking German fighters) It's interesting seeing the footage side by side with the finished movie.

& for the final bombing run in the canyon he copied the Lancaster bomb runs from the Dambusters

That was Clay Lacy out of Van Nuys that did the Lear stunt. They fabricated a false main landing gear and affixed it to the left wing. After take off, they retracted just the real left main. You saw the result.

When the Lear was bellied in, they dug a trench, towed the plane in, and backfilled with dirt up to the belly skin.

OK. so I was guessing at the location (maybe it was set in the Midwest ?), at least you knew what I meant , Chino would make more sense re. location to Hollywood

interesting on the catch 22 hack scene, i always wondered how they did that too, especially decades before digital / computer photo technology. now they can take those melons & eat them for a snack, while pushing a few buttons to create the same scene!!!

I’m sure “Wings” has been mentioned.

I saw this in a theater once with a live piano player. He played nonstop through the whole movie, which was just amazing. That is a skill that only a handful of people today have.

And Clara Bow had it going on!

i can think of countless scenes from dr strangelove..... 2 of my favorites being actor slim pickins naming the survival gear " 1 pack of chewing gum...... 2 propholactics....... etc . & then naturally when he rides the nuke down like a rodeo guy on a busting bronco. peter sellers was fabulous in multiple roles in that flick, my favorite being soviet premier pissoff!!!! talk about a dark comedy!!!

By the way - and you may think I'm barmy but in the 1980s I remember seeing a colour film or TV movie which had some form of duel between a P-40 and German tank - the P-40 could only fast taxi and not fly (for some reason) AM I mad or can anyone tell me what it was!

It was set in the desert I think....

I remember that movie. Lloyd Bridges was the tank commander and Doug McClure was the Warhawk pilot. I think that Roy Thinnes was in there too somewhere. I seem to remember seeing it in the early 70's though, made for TV movie?
